Twitter Reacts to Tennis Star Andy Murray Calling Out Casual Sexism

Andy Murray called out a reporter’s casual sexism at the podium after a Wimbledon loss to American Sam Querrey on Wednesday (July 12).

A reporter asked Andy about Sam “becoming the first American to reach a grand slam semi-final since 2009,” and Andy responded, “male player.” The audience in the room laughed, but Andy remained straight faced and serious.

American tennis star Serena Williams has won 12 Grand Slam Tournaments since 2009. Venus Williams just reached the Wimbledon semi-finals Tuesday, and has been a celebrated player for years as well. Other American female players include Coco Vandeweghe and Madison Keys, who have played in Grand Slam semi-finals in the past couple of years.

Love him! Too bad he’s out of Wimbledon

Gosh, what sexism. They try to make news out of nothing. The reporter was nervous, made an honest mistake, was corrected. Big deal. Move on.

  • Jen

The problem is that these reporters consantly make these “mistakes”

  • irena.bursova

What an amazing little moment. We need more men like AM.

  • irena.bursova

It’s not about that one reporter. The problem is that his individual “honest mistake” is part of the structural problem – where women are non-existent and men are the only people.

  • Thomas

Serena williams needs a dna test. It is probably a man

  • rosaryblue

That is the mark of a real man – stands up for what is right. People are saying it was a small mistake by the reporter, but no, it wasn’t. Not after the track record of the Williams sisters….Thank you Andy for standing up for equality and doing it with CLASS.

  • rosaryblue

Also, thank you Andy for not laughing it off as so many do………..mad props to this guy

  • Douglas from Brazil

Exactly. How disinformed was the journalist.

  • Sam80

And you are, probably a moron. Although, you being a moron is more of a definite than a probability. Good luck with that.

  • Shelby

Left out one word. Make a huge deal. Overly sensitive

  • Gina

Sometimes “one word” makes a world of difference.

  • Crystal

And you are disgusting but I am sure you knew that.

  • Crystal

Women are overlooked too often. Good on this athlete for recognizing that.

Maybe he knows nothing about sport and tennis, maybe he was sent to ask the given question from “tool and supplies” department. I, honestly had no idea about the current ranking “women, men” situation he had mentioned. I might ve asked the same question, but that would show my unproffesionalism, not sexism. He either didn’t know or was too nervous and didn’t add “male” to his question. There are sexism issues in the world, tons and tons of them, but this is not the case even close.

If you’re a man and have hips, thighs and breasts that look like Serena’s, you might want to get *your* DNA tested. I can barely think of a more classically female shape than Serena’s.

  • Shelby

If you want to really focus on women. Maybe look around the world to see some REALLY unfortunate treatings of women. Asking a tennis player about men’s tennis in an interview is hardly something to be up in arms about. Comparatively speaking it pales.

Why that real problem is brushed under the rug is beyond me. Our female tennis players still have their genitalia and freedom.

  • Shelby

EXACTLY. I guess this minor issue attacks their favorite target. God forbid they tackle the important issues
