Serena Williams Praises Andy Murray for Calling Out Sexism

Serena Williams is speaking out to praise her friend Andy Murray after he called out a reporter’s sexist comment during a Wimbledon press conference.

Andy was asked about being defeated by American player Sam Querrey, who became the first male American to reach the semi-finals of a grand slam tournament since 2009. When the reporter said Sam was the “first American” to reach the point since 2009, Andy chimed in the specify “male player.”

Serena has won 12 grand slam tournaments since 2009 and other female players, including her sister Venus, have reached the semi-finals.

“I don’t think there’s a woman player, and there shouldn’t be a female athlete that is not totally supportive of Andy Murray,” Serena said on ESPN’s The Six. “He has spoken up for women’s issues and women’s rights, especially in tennis, for forever. And he does it again, you know! That’s who he is and one thing we love about him. He has such a wonderful mother who has been such a strong figure in his life and he’s done so much for us on our tour. We love Andy Murray.”
