Jodie Whittaker Named as 13th Doctor on 'Doctor Who'

Actress Jodie Whittaker will star as the first female lead in the hit series Doctor Who.

The 34-year-old British actor will take over when Peter Capaldi leaves his role following the Christmas special later this year, the BBC announced after the 2017 Wimbledon finals.

You may recognize Jodie from Broadchurch.

“I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris [Chibnall, new writer and executive producer] and with every Whovian on this planet,” Jodie said. “It’s more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.”
