'War for the Planet of the Apes' Beats 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' at Weekend Box Office

War for the Planet of the Apes took the No. 1 spot at this weekend’s box office with a $56.5 million debut.

According to THR – the film starring Woody Harrelson and Andy Serkis – came in 22 percent behind the last movie in 2014, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which opened to $72.6 million.

Taking the second spot was Spider-Man: Homecoming, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Michael Keaton, and Robert Downey Jr., which brought in an additional $45.2 million for a domestic total of $208.3 million so far.

Coming in at No. 3 was Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig‘s animated flick, Despicable Me 3, earning $18.9 million for a total of $188 million.

Rounding out the top five were Baby Driver and The Big Sick, grossing $8.8 million and $7.7 million, respectively.

Meanwhile, Ryan Phillippe and Joey King‘s new film Wish Upon debuted to $5.5 million.
