'Game of Thrones' Director Defends Ed Sheeran's Cameo

The director of the Game of Thrones premiere, Jeremy Podeswa, is defending Ed Sheeran for his cameo after Twitter was polarized over his appearance during the episode.

“I’m a bit surprised that people have made that much fuss about it. To me, he does seem quite organic, in his own way, to the show,” Jeremy told Daily Beast.

“The truth is, everybody on the show is famous now. So it doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s about, are they appropriate for the role? Are they doing a good job? And it was yes, yes, yes to all those questions with him,” Jeremy continued, adding Ed was “delightful” to direct. Ed deleted his Twitter account hours after his cameo aired.

“He is a lovely person; he’s really down-to-earth. If you didn’t know that he was a pop star or an entertainer of any kind, you would think he’s just one of the guys. And he is. He really just wanted to do a great job. He’s been acting for a little while; he takes it very seriously. And he was a real trouper, too. We were shooting in the middle of nowhere in Northern Ireland. He sat around outside with the cast and crew all day long, and just kind of hung out and was good-humored and lovely. He took direction well. He really could not have been nicer,” Jeremy continued.

“It is a funny thing because I really, genuinely believe that if you didn’t know who he was, you would have just thought he was one of the gang, effortlessly,” he concluded.

His cameo wasn’t that bad, a bit distracting but that’s it.

honestly – I really don’t understand why people make such a big fuss about it. He was there, I recognised him, it was fine and I could go on with the episode. He’s so average looking, that it was a really good fit.

some things do not need to be defended. He’s soft if he has to delete twitter for a quick minute.

First let know say I hardly know who this guy is. I’m not into pop music. But I read recently that he deleted his twitter before and that he said he couldn’t wrap his head around why people dislike him so badly. I honestly believe it’s his looks. I think he has a look that people don’t associate with a pop star and he sings romantic, sensual songs which people don’t identify with someone who isn’t sexy. I do believe there is an irrational, intense dislike of him. As for the cameo role in GOT, it was dumb to put him in there – very distracting. And to have him singing. It was too “on the nose”. GOT has a very specific kind of fanbase. We don’t want to see red-headed pop stars kitted out in period clothes singing their 2017 pop music round a fire.

He sang a song (mostly off screen) and then sat on a log like a turnip next to Arya for the rest of the scenes doing nothing. That’s not acting. It was blatant exploitation of “star” Ed Sheeran that backfired hilariously on the director/producers. All the other cameos so far have been discreet (mostly in heavy costume.) This would have only worked if it ended with Arya slaughtering them all. But the director’s story is ridiculous: “appropriate for the role? doing a good job?” That “role” would normally go to some extra and then they wouldn’t even have had the (awkward) screentime since she’s talking to the other people (actual actors!) in the scene.

I don’t care about him as a singer but it was absolutely unnecessary and useless. He was there only to sang a bit of a song, not to act. What was the purpose of the scene? If they had done otherwise, it would have been fine. He was there only because he’s one of the most popular singers right now, that’s all.

I agree; thought he did a good job with his few lines and sounded beautiful on the singing stuff.
