Donald Trump 'Sad' to See Confederate Monuments Taken Down

Donald Trump took to Twitter this morning to make clear that he’s sad to see Confederate monuments taken down.

The 45th President of the United States is under fire for not immediately denouncing white supremacy and his press conference he gave which was heavily criticized.

“Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. You can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson – who’s next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!,” he wrote.

See all of his tweets from this morning below…

Removing these structures that commemorate the Confederacy has nothing to do with “erasing history”.

You respect history by documenting it in permanent records.
You pay homage to the ideology of groups and persons by erecting statues and monuments to their memory.

We honor the likes of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln for their roles in creating and preserving the nation.
We should not be honoring those who committed sedition in their efforts to split it asunder.

And neo-Nazis, white supremacists, Klan members, etc. are not “good people”, no matter their motivation for congregating.

Washington and Jefferson had slaves. Jefferson had a child with a slave. Roosevelt interned Japanese Americans during WWII. Shall we tear all their monuments down also?

  • labman57

The monuments to Washington and Jefferson are not to honor their role as slave owners, but to recognize their importance to the establishment of our nation.

The statues erected long after the Civil War honoring the Confederacy are specifically paying homage to those who attempted to split the nation apart.

Civil Rights Icon, Dr. Martin Luther King, preached from the pulpit that homosexuality was a sin and abomination. Lets tear those statues and rename the streets. We certainly don’t want to celebrate America’s homophobic past!

Typical liberal response. What’s your excuse for Roosevelt’s internment camps for Japanese Americans?

Lee, Stonewall etc are remembered in the history that is taught in schools as traitors.

So shut up with this bs with trying to erase history. These traitors to the United States of America will be remembered but not with statues on federal, state or city property. Go to a private museum if you want to worship Lee, Stonewall Jackson or others who tried to overthrow the USA.

I think people have right to campaign for statues to be taken down if they support evil people. Look at the statues of Sadamn Hussain, Hitler, Stalin etc;I think it was right to take down those statues.
i think more right wing dictators need to have their statues taken down.
The British Empire killed 80 million in famines in India, are they expected to admire British leaders who did that to them?

I thought DT45 liked winners. Last time I read history, the confederates didn’t come in first.

Trump is a buffoon. He is the face of treason and betrayal, replacing Benedict Arnold in the history books, standing on the fully supportive shoulders of the GOP.

Trump supporters think he will build a wall, kick a bunch of brown people out, and most importantly, Make America “Great” Again. They hope he will get rid of Obamacare, which ironically, will hurt them the most. Under Obamacare, my pre-existing condition is insured. Before it, I struggled to make payments. Under the exchange, I pay just $200/month for health insurance. Also – My car insurance is down to $25/month (from Insurance-Panda). My renters insurance is just $10/month. Under Trump, America will become too unaffordable to live in.

Trump is either a buffoon — not good — or in service of the Russians — same. His advisors and Congress need to stop enabling and apologizing for Trump’s treasonous behavior. Congress needs to commence impeachment proceedings.

Won’t be long before Americans have had just enough to rush the White House and forcibly remove Trump from office like they did in Egypt.

  • j b

Yeah but you will never get the Trump supporting deplorables along with the racist and Nazis to realize that.

It’s sad that our president cares more about stone monuments than actual people getting hurt/killed.

The good thing is this is bringing to light our racist history and system that still exists today. America is far from perfect and that includes our leaders. But as Stonewall Jackson’s great-great grandsons said about the removal of Jackson’s statue, which they are for, “will begin to tell the truth of us all coming to our senses”.

  • labman57

Imagine if post-WWII Germany proclaimed to the world:
“Okay, anti-Semitism is wrong … but you can’t expect us to tear down all of our monuments and statues of Hitler and the Third Reich, right? After all, that’s part of our history, our cultural heritage.”

  • TaraTeller

I think we all are aware of America’s history with slavery and racism. These statues have been there for years and now all of a sudden they have to be removed? I don’t agree with this. Destroying statues doesn’t not change history. This is a hysterical reaction to Charlottesville and I fear for this country. It’s going to be destroyed by leftists, democrats and people who hate America. I love this country with all its flaws. Slavery was a long time ago and everyone needs to get over it. This great country is doomed by intolerance from the left
