Lena Waithe Hopes To Go Beyond Chicago's 'Dehumanizing' Headlines with 'The Chi'

Lena Waithe made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday evening (January 9) and dished all about her new Showtime show The Chi.

The 33-year-old Emmy winner seeks to repair misconceptions throughout America about what Chicago and Chicagoans are really all about with the series, which airs every Sunday.

“It’s not a jungle. It’s not a bunch of hooligans,” Lena told Stephen. “I think there’s this sort of idea that if you’re from the south side of Chicago then you’re just packing, you got a gun in your bag and you’re just ready to shoot whomever. The truth is that it’s just a lot of working class folk trying to make a living, go to work, feed their kids and go to church when they can. That’s what I really wanted to tell, a human story.”

“I don’t think people often think of black folk as human beings, I think it was important that I did that,” Lena added. “We’re becoming dehumanized. I think when you dehumanize us you become desensitized to our deaths and I think that’s problematic. I just wanted to put a human face behind those statics.”
