Mark Wahlberg Donates $1.5 Million to Time's Up in Michelle Williams' Name

Mark Wahlberg has announced that he is donating $1.5 million to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund after it was revealed he made that much more than Michelle Williams on the reshoots for All the Money in the World.

The 46-year-old actor refused to work for free when the movie was re-shot in November to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer, though Michelle agreed to work for the base rate of $80 a day, totaling out to just $1,000.

“Over the last few days my reshoot fee for All The Money in the World has become an important topic of conversation. I 100% support the fight for fair pay and I’m donating the $1.5 million to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams‘ name,” Mark said in a statement.

Mark‘s agents at WME, the same agency that represent Michelle, announced that they will donate $500,000 to the fund, in addition to the $1 million already donated by the agency.

“The current conversation is a reminder that those of us in a position of influence have a responsibility to challenge inequities, including the gender wage gap. In recognition of the pay discrepancy on All The Money In The World reshoots, WME is donating an additional $500,000 to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams‘ name, following our $1 million pledge to the organization earlier this month,” WME announced in a statement. “It’s crucial that this conversation continues within our community and we are committed to being part of the solution.”

Everyone is very vocal about this case – apart from Michelle herself. But with that forced yet clever PR donation… I hope that Jessica Chastain is happy now.

    Still hate you.

  • gwen

Well this should put a stop to this story. Good move on his part.

  • Just Saying

PR, guilt or simply wanting to put a stop to the story, this was a very good move on him, smart too, despite the fact that it was not his fault what happened but whoever deals with Michelle’s contracts.

  • Robert

Along with being good at getting his money, he’s smart when it comes to PR, so this move doesn’t surprise me.

  • persononhere

but she WILLINGLY took that rate of pay. what’s the problem??

  • gwen

Cool Boots/Cindy S, why are you still impersonating me? You had quite the meltdown from your Cool Boots account this morning. Was it because you got caught impersonating Harryetcraig?

  • Thiran Uthaman

I never liked Mark, but damn.. its hot his fault he got paid more, yet he was bullied by the media and twitter to give up his money.

  • Michele V

He can donate as much money as he wants, he still attacked and hurled racial abuse at a Vietnamese man.

The problem is that it exposed the disparity in which women are provided the opportunity/knowledge to negotiate pay v. men. Women don’t often negotiate their salaries because they aren’t aware they have the opportunity to v. a man almost always negotiating a salary increase. With Mark and Michelle being represented by the same agency, Michelle could have easily been informed that Mark asked for, and received $1.5 million for the re-shoots, giving her the opportunity to still re-shoot the film for free, negotiate a higher wage, or ask to be matched the same as Mark. She wasn’t afforded that opportunity.

  • plez

Agree with most of what you wrote.but Wahlberg is at fault for doing interviews before the movie was release saying that ALL the actors did the reshoot for little or no money. He knowingly lied because it’s all about the image for him. Now he’s donating a million plus for the same reason. Not for any cause.

  • wearing

I still remember his past, but this is an excellent way to make up for the pay disparity. Good on him & his team.

  • plez

Even with all this Michelle still want earn anymore in salary than she did before. She does small films mostly. She does not bring people to the movies. Jennifer Lawrence salary conversation, before she woke up and started demanding a certain amt, would have been a better mountain to stand on to fight for better wages for women. She had proven that she could bring people to the theaters.

He isn’t where he is for being stupid, he is all about the business and it clearly shows. He didn’t have to do it, public shaming is the new low.

I like mcihelle willimas, but i don’t blame him for getting paid what he did. He was smart and had a better agent.

  • persononhere

or gee, maybe she could have ASKED? why should they inform her, if a woman isn’t smart enough to ask i think some blame lands on her. why assume someone will tell you. all she had to do was ask if Mark was making the same and base her decision accordingly. if they had lied or still given her less then that is a problem. but she is as fault for not asking. it’s so simple. it’s not ok to use ignorance as an excuse to be compensated. women shouldn’t be dumb, you know…

I think it has to do with where the individual’s focus is. She loved the movie and the director and she said — without hesitation — I’ll do whatever you need. Her focus was the work; she was not motivated by the money. It seems that asking for more money did not even enter her mind, nor that of her agent. Wahlberg, on the other hand, is motivated by money and by fame — I still can’t believe this joker gets to be an A-list actor, I really can’t. But let’s face it — he has an agent who played hardball. Why Michelle’s agent didn’t play hardball is beyond me, but the director of this movie (or the producer — I forget which one) has said he was TOTALLY blindsided by this revelation because NONE of the actors were supposed to get paid anything beyond scale. Wahlberg is the only one who received a massive increase.

  • Penny Dreadful

To be fair — and this isn’t a knee-jerk swipe at Lawrence — but she didn’t start her career bringing people to the theaters. She was once-in-a-lifetime lucky to get picked for a franchise that brought people into the theaters. People were going to flock to The Hunger Games no matter who the star was. THAT movie was a star maker.

  • Penny Dreadful

Honestly, we don’t know what opportunity Michelle was afforded, because Michelle hasn’t spoken on this.

  • angela colclasure

They would not be able to inform her of what he was making due to employment laws. Thats personal and protected information. I am sure she would have heard about it eventually like she did, but usually thats after the fact. But i think its her and her management’s fault 100%. At that time they had all the power, they had shot the movie and NEEDED her to get those reshoots done.
