Laurie Metcalf, Saoirse Ronan & Greta Gerwig Open Up About Working on a Female-Led Set

Laurie Metcalf, Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig are on the cover of Entertainment Weekly‘s Oscars Guide issue, due out on newsstands on Friday (January 26).

Here’s what the Best Picture-nominated Lady Bird cast and crew had to say:

Saoirse, on working on a female-led set: “Don’t take this the wrong way [turns to Greta] but I don’t see you, like, as a female director. I just think of you as a great director. A great filmmaker. I think the reason why the set was run so well is that Greta‘s a great leader. And that can come from a man or woman, it just depends how you manage the power that you have, and how you choose to use it. And she used it in the best way possible.”

Greta, on whether making a distinction between male and female directors is a good thing: “I’m in the middle of thinking about all this too. Making the distinction is hard. I want more female voices as writers and directors and producers and creators. I deeply want that. But I don’t want it to be seen as inherently different based on gender. But I do want to get closer to 50/50 in terms of creators. I think the work is richer for it. There are more opportunities for different kinds of stories when there are a diversity of creators.”

Greta, on the magic of the movie: “I felt it from the very beginning. You start getting the feeling that the movie wants to exist. That sounds a little goofy, but that’s what it feels like.”
