Best Buy to Stop Selling CDs, Target May Follow

Best Buy has reportedly made the decision to stop carrying physical CDs in their stores starting later this year.

Effective July 1, the retailer will no longer sell CDs, but they will continue to carry vinyl for at least the next two years.

Target may follow as another retailer to stop selling CDs in stores. Billboard is reporting that the store is trying to make a deal with music suppliers to sell CDs on a consignment basis, so that they aren’t stuck with the cost of shipping back unsold CDs.

Best Buy was once the most music sales of any merchandiser in the U.S., but these days the company is only selling around $40 million annually, according to Billboard.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Best Buy’s decision to stop selling CDs?

Damn. I still love buying CDs as opposed to buying music digitally.

This is an absolute nightmare decision based off pure ignorance. It is anti-consumer, removing the ability to own music and forcing you to an inferior digital product. CDs will ALWAYS be technological superior to ANY lossy format download. I only buy CDs so they will not see any more of my money if this is indeed true. Horrible just absolutely atrocious.

UGH! I see physical media becoming extinct some time soon. NOOOOOOOO!

I still buy cds and vinyl. DIGITAL SUCKS. mp3 is compressed quality. The CD I just bought, Amazon wants 12.99 for the mp3 album and 9.97 for the cd. I refuse to pay more for compressed audio

The only time I’ll buy an album on mp3 is if it’s an independent artist I like that doesn’t have physical distribution
