Natalie Portman Says She Has '100 Stories' of Harassment

Natalie Portman poses for the cover of Porter magazine‘s Spring issue, on newsstands February 9.

Here is what the 36-year-old Oscar-winning actress shared with the mag:

On a time of change in Hollywood: “They have created this cultural shift. A lot of people have been speaking out for a long time and not been heard, particularly women of color, so it’s very important the industry listens.”

On her own experience of harassment: “I went from thinking, ‘I don’t have a story’ to ‘Oh, wait, I have 100 stories.’ And I think a lot of people are having these reckonings with themselves, of things that we just took for granted as like, this is part of the process.”

On finding friends in Hollywood: “Recently, I’ve been spending more time with other actresses, not in a fake ‘just because we’re actresses so we should hang out’ way. I feel there’s been a shift. I felt that way on Annihilation too, working with a strong female ensemble cast. We are used to being ‘the girl’ on set. It was such a joy to be with a group of women.”

On social media: “It’s an interesting moment where technology is colliding with history. But there’s a downside too – that addiction to technology and the impact it has on people, the disposability of information.”

FYI: Natalie is wearing a Vivienne Westwood top and Isabel Marant shorts and earrings on the cover.

“I went from thinking, ‘I don’t have a story’ to ‘Oh, wait, I have 100 stories.” Yeah, if winking is sexual harassment then I have 100 stories too. What an idiot! A person should know if they were harassed or not. There is a legal definition of what sexual harassment is. It’s not something arbitrary.

What was once normalized is now identified as not being okay. It was once normal for women not to vote and now it’s not okay to discriminate based on gender. It’s called progress and it’s happening before your eyes.

You do realize most legal definitions of sexual harrassment are pretty broad. So yeah, if that wink is part of an unwelcome sexual advance, it’s sexual harassment. Many women are conditioned to accept certain behaviors as life and something they have to tolerate to be in the work place. It may feel bad, but not be something at the time they know to be harassment.

Courts and employers generally use the definition of sexual harassment contained in the guidelines of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). This language has also formed the basis for most state laws prohibiting sexual harassment. The guidelines state:

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when

submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment,

submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individuals, or

such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working environment. (29 C.F.R. § 1604.11 [1980])

True. Sexual harassment involves blackmail to keep your job or making one’s life hell at work for rejecting sex. Now you need to explain that to these celebrities to who are mixing solicitation with harassment. When somebody offers you a gig in exchange for sex they are not harassing you because they are not even employing you. That’s just indecent proposal that you can reject and walk away.
