Laverne Cox Says Casting Directors 'Don’t Necessarily Consider' Her for Roles

Laverne Cox is opening up about how it is sometimes difficult for her to find work in Hollywood.

The 45-year-old Orange is the New Black actress stopped took part in a Black History Month conversation on Thursday night (February 22) at Macy’s in New York City where she said that she feels like many casting directors “don’t necessarily consider” her for roles.

“Two years ago … I was in the waiting room with actresses who were like, ‘Oh my God, this is my fourth audition today. And I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve never auditioned that much.’ There have never been that many parts as a black, openly transgender woman,” Laverne told the audience. “Because I am who I am, there probably have been fewer opportunities for me to work. I feel like we’ve made the very most of what we have been given … I feel very blessed now.”

Laverne does realize how lucky she is to have found a voice in Hollywood in this day and age.

“Certainly there are fewer opportunities for someone like me being black and being trans and being a woman. In the face of that, it’s not bad,” Laverne said. “The truth is I’m one of the lucky ones. The question for me becomes … as I produce, how to bring other people along for the ride.”

I think she’s a great actress and I’d love to see her in more stuff where she’s just a person, not necessarily a trans person representing trans people.

Well, no, there are never going to be a lot of parts for black transgender women. Why would there be? You are a teeny percent of the population.

At least she’s not delusional about the realities of the world and expresses her gratitude. It is refreshing to see one black snowflake that is not ridiculously and laughably entitled.

She sounds like a dude and is built like a dude, like most trans women. She will never pass for a bio woman. She is massive and sizable in every way.
She can only play a trans person, perhaps on a few tv shows as a supporting character, and then become a panelist on The View or smthng. She will not have a long or real acting career. She can’t.
Nobody will cast her in a black panther sequel.

if they can make tom cruise big and give guys those tall shoes and cast small people to make him look bigger, then they can do the opposite. and seeing her on tv, i don’t know her size unless she’s next to a small person. it’s all perspective. and i didnt say she should be cast as a bio woman, i said normal person. as in, where she’s a person and the character has nothing to do with being trans-like how she was cousin gina in the mindy project.
