Chris Pratt's Tweet to Kevin Smith Sparks Controversy, James Gunn Reacts

Chris Pratt tweeted at Kevin Smith after he revealed he suffered a “massive heart attack,” and some people are not happy with the words he chose.

Chris tweeted, “Kevin we don’t know each other too good but I have loved you since Clerks and I’m praying my ass off for you cause I believe in the healing power of prayer. Can you please pray with me people!? Praying for you. I will continue to. You inspired me with Clerks when I was a senior HS. I’m tagging my Lb/rb football coach who showed me the movie cause he believed in me and knew I’d be inspired.”

Some took offense to Chris telling Kevin he was praying for him, citing that “thoughts and prayers” don’t work when it comes to mass shootings.

Some of the replies to Chris include, “Yup, thoughts and prayers to mass murder victims too,” “Praying clearly does not work! If it did and if there was this ‘God’ you’ve been brainwashed to believe in, those poor people at the school in Florida wouldn’t have been shot to death etc etc etc etc etc,” and “WTF is praying going to do? Wise up! He’s in hospital, science is the best place for him, diet change and exercise. Not random thoughts by you or anyone else!”

James Gunn, ChrisGuardians of the Galaxy director, came to his defense a short time later.

It sounds like people on Twitter definitely overreacted to Chris’ tweet.

People are plain stupid on Twitter.

  • Betafish

Some people are just stupid. Take things in context and also be real. Prayer is a good thing and he was extending well wishes. To muddy the water with something unrelated and political is just ridiculous. People go too far and nothing makes sense after a while!

  • Nematocyte

His tweet felt preachy. I don’t use Twitter nor would have I responded if I did, but throwing in the “I believe in the healing power of prayer” and asking his readers “can you please pray with me!?” is gratuitous.

But it could be worse, imagine the response had he said, “I believe in the healing power of Magic Elfstones.”

I always pray to the noodle monster before I go to bed, but it never leaves salami under my pillow. so sad.

All hail the glorious green broccoli.

  • Nematocyte

His tweet was gratuitous even though I personally have no issue with it (if I had twitter, I would simply not respond).

As for the healing power of prayer, it works about as well as the healing power of [insert anything you pray to here].

Is chris supposed to talk about heart attack reform orrrrr

  • R.V

I’m not a religious person either but everyone has the right to their beliefs. Ridiculing or chastising someone for sending sympathies is ignorant.

  • Jaclyn Shortt

    Twitter is too fucking much.

  • R.V

People are just looking for reasons to be offended now. The internet is a cesspool of ignorance.

Just because all prayers aren’t answers doesn’t mean a believer should stop praying.
Chris did a good thing and of course the worse of some wanted to ruin it.

  • Happy Camper

Seriously, I do not see the problem with his original Tweets. It’s like I see on Twitter from time to time: “What y’all mad about today?”

  • 🦋 Blue Diamond 💎

Exactly. How do you link this situation with gun violence?! Kevin wasn’t shot…it was heart attack. How do these two topics intertwine at all?!

  • rubie

I stand by Chris’s praying tweet, we must all pray for the people who don’t want us too………PERIOD!!!!

I left Twitter because people are so mean. I bet 80% of these celebrities wouldn’t even be on Twitter if their management wasn’t forcing them. Excluding Kardashians and other fame whores who seek attention and charge by tweet.

Look up the definition of “chastise” and get back to me, champ.

  • R.V

I don’t need to look it up because I know what it means, it means to reprimand someone. Did you not know what it meant, sport.

  • Nematocyte

You either need a better dictionary or you need to understand that you can’t cherry pick the portions you like and disregard the ones you don’t like. Reprimanding is synonymous with chastise, but they are not the same.

To chastise is to SEVERELY reprimand, and “severely” is operationally very important to the definition. Now that you have that information on board, ask yourself, “Did this guy really chastise anyone else?”

If you still come back with a ‘yes’ to that question, well, then words just don’t have any real meaning to you and that’s a person to avoid.

  • R.V

Okay, now you’re just arguing semantics. Go home, have a drink, and chill the fuck out.

    Bloody knob…

  • Nematocyte

Did you find a better dictionary yet? I understand that facts are anathema to a lot of people but once you embrace reality, you’ll have a much better life, I promise you.

  • R.V

Dude, you’re such a sad little troglodyte, I actually pity you. You have my sympathies.

  • Nematocyte

Quit dodging the question. You clearly have internet access, put it to good use and educate yourself, fool.

  • R.V

Young man, I realize you have a learning disability so I’m not going to keep insulting you. Perhaps after you get some treatment we can come back and discuss this issue further. I’m blocking you for now but I’ll unblock you in a few months and we can see if you’ve gotten any better. Good luck, and godspeed.

  • Nematocyte

Still haven’t answered the question and only cowardly little men block people. Coward.

  • CB

    Seems that way to me!

If Mr. Pratt could have done something to help Mr. Smith, and he prayed instead, that would have clearly been hypocrisy.

…but talking to your imaginary friend after there’s nothing else left to do doesn’t seem like it would hurt anyone… Kevin doesn’t believe in any of that nonsense, and he doesn’t appear to have been offended.
