Steven Spielberg Reveals Why He Thinks Streaming Movies Don't Deserve Oscars

Steven Spielberg is sharing his opinion on the type of awards that movies distributed via streaming services, like Netflix, should win.

The Ready Player One director spoke out in an interview with ITV News published on Tuesday (March 20).

He called streaming services “a clear and present danger to filmgoers.”

“Fewer and fewer filmmakers are going to struggle to raise money, or to compete at Sundance and possibly get one of the specialty labels to release their films theatrically. And more of them are going to let the SVOD [Streaming Video On-Demand] businesses finance their films, maybe with the promise of a slight, one-week theatrical window to qualify them for awards as a movie.”

“But, in fact, once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie…you deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar.”

“I don’t believe that films that are just given token qualifications, in a couple of theaters for less than a week, should qualify for the Academy Award nominations,” he said.

How many bigillions did YOUR film make Mr. Spielberg? No one even bothers to see your films today.

  • Monchis Cervantes

do you think he cares about the money he makes, he does movies because he likes it. And I agree with him, Netflix is a shit

  • Sansa Squad

to be fair, he’s talking about awards, not money… he’s saying that it’s not fair that filmmakers who “sell out” (my words, not his) to streaming/”tv” services are allowed to submit for “film” awards on a technicality. he’s not saying they’re better or worse or should make more or less money, just that they should be considered for emmys and not oscars because “tv”/streaming is really the medium used to distribute and consume them. I don’t know if I totally agree with him, but regardless the headline is misleading clickbait and ignores the nuances of what he’s actually talking about… and fwiw, his movies still do very well – in large part BECAUSE of the oscar buzz they get, which I imagine is kind of his point in terms of distinction…

YES he does care care about the money he makes. I’m sick of idiots acting like the rich don’t care about being rich as if they would get rid of all of their money out of integrity.

This is an ignorant, asinine statement. Spielberg is the greatest American Film Director ever. His Films have grossed BILLIONS and he changed the movie industry forever with Jaws. Show some respect

I guess if anyone is allowed to have an opinion on this, it’s Steven Spielberg.

He’s right. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. At the most they should be nominated for perhaps a best STREAMING film but they should not go up against films who took the chance and showed in theaters which is a much harder feat then steaming to someone’s cell phone, laptop, or smart tv.

The reason some filmmakers get SVOD businesses to finance their films is because no-one else will and it is the only way for them to make their passion project made. Not everyone has the luxury of big name/specialty labels fighting to win the rights to their films like Spielberg.

Stevie Spielberg forgot Manchester by the Sea was made by AMAZON, a “streaming” service.

  • Sansa Squad

Amazon still distributed that movie to theaters for a significant (and successful) theatrical run – not just the one- or two-week “technical” release he’s condemning here. And considering there was a bidding war for the movie, I doubt they would’ve given it to Amazon if that would’ve disqualified it from awards contention…

  • Katrina

Doesn’t matter, it was still produced by a streaming service and available to that service at an early date.

  • Sansa Squad

    And your point is…?
