During her appearance, Roseanne discussed her 2012 presidential run, being the “original crazy tweeter,” being a former friend of Hillary Clinton‘s, supporting Donald Trump, how they tackle politics on the show, and she reveals how she feels about the state of our country.

“It’s up to us to make this government work, no matter who’s president. It’s up to us to do our jobs as citizens, and if we don’t like something, let ‘em know you don’t like it. And then you get another election in two years – get out there and vote. Change it if you don’t like it,” she said.

She’s been nutty and she’s been shocking and she’s been inappropriate, but one thing Roseanne has never really been is unreasonable. I like her tone here. She is being completely reasonable, and it’s the same “defense” of Trump I’ve used since he got elected. He CAN do some good things and he HAS already done some good things. No decent American should want a president to fail. That means the country would be in grave danger. And also elections are exactly about choosing and changing. This time the majority of Americans signaled a desire for change by electing Donald Trump. Who the hell has the right to suggest that those peolple’s opinions are worthless? This is why people hate Hillary so much. Insulting white women, insulting people from small towns, calling 50% of Americans “a basket of deplorables” — these insults do not make most Americans want a Democrat in the White House — this is unrelated to how we might personally feel about Trump.

We don’t want 45 to fail. We just want him the fuck out.

I would like to see us be able to vote online or something so that voter turnout is HUGE instead of like 25% of the population. But, if we can’t even protect in-person ballots, I have no idea how we can vote online without interference. I struggle right now with just getting registered! It seems like I’m not on the list, even though I mailed it in. It would just be nice, though, for everyone to have a say. I wonder what the results would be if everyone voted.

Exactly. I know in some countries you’re required by law to vote if you’re eligible, otherwise you have to pay a penalty, so they have huge voter turnouts and more political engagement from the ground up. (Sure, it leads to a lot of disengaged and uninformed people voting, but doesn’t that happen anyway?) Plus, it might lead to the emergence of viable third-party candidates with views more in line with the moderate majority, who, if they actually voted, could make a real difference – which, of course, is why the “establishment” doesn’t WANT everyone voting, hence voter suppression…

I guess she’s on her best behavior because it’s ABC, but it’s astounding how much more coherent and civil she comes across here than she does on social media.

He wasn’t elected by the majority of Americans, and his supporters – the so-called “deplorables” – do not make up 50% of this country (something like 45% of eligible voters didn’t even vote, right?) so it’s not really fair or accurate to argue that he of all people represents how “most” Americans, or even half of them, feel.

That said, I do get your point – I just still have trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that people could take such great offense to words like “deplorable” (especially the crowd that decries our culture for being “too PC”) yet those same people can put their “personal feelings” about him aside to support him. Like, you saw the things she said as representing Democrats’ values as a whole, yet you’re totally capable of separating *his* “politics” from him as a person. Again, not trying to invalidate how you feel, and it all worked out for you, I guess, so who cares what I think, but I do wish people would own up to what it really came down to: “they’ve both said insulting things, but he’s never insulted ME,” instead of trying to argue that the things she said were somehow worse…

i think that’s why people still like her (unlike someone like Rosie O’Donnell). she expresses herself honestly but doesn’t really seem extreme or alienating. i never really watched Rosanne too much but hope the 2nd time around to catch some episodes. i’m glad she’s getting another shot w/goodman and that cast

She wants publicity so people will continue to watch the reboot. Some may watch the first episode out of nostalgia and curiosity but she’s hoping for more to keep the money coming.
