Serena Williams Pulls Out of French Open After Injury Ahead of Maria Sharapova Match

Serena Williams will no longer be competing in the French Open as she’s had to withdraw due to injury.

The 36-year-old tennis star was set to compete against Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, but she has suffered a pectoral muscle injury and announced the upsetting news on Monday (June 4) in a press conference.

“I unfortunately been having some issues with my peck muscle… right now I can’t actually serve so it’s actually hard to play when I can’t physically serve,” Serena said.

“I’m beyond disappointed. I gave up so much, from time with my daughter to time with my family. I put everything on the court….So it’s really difficult to be in this situation,” Serena said (via ESPN).

Serena will undergo an MRI on Tuesday (June 5).

We’re wishing Serena well and hope she has a quick recovery.
