Henry Cavill Apologizes for Statements About #MeToo Movement

Henry Cavill has issued an apology for his statements about the #MeToo movement in a recent interview, where he stated he is hesitant to go up to a woman and talk to her “because I’m going to be called a rapist of something.”

In his apology statement, Henry said to Huffington Post, “Having seen the reaction to an article in particular about my feelings on dating and the #metoo movement, I just wanted to apologize for any confusion and misunderstanding that this may have created. Insensitivity was absolutely not my intention. In light of this I would just like to clarify and confirm to all that I have always and will continue to hold women in the highest of regard, no matter the type of relationship whether it be friendship, professional, or a significant other.”

“Never would I intend to disrespect in any way, shape or form,” Henry added. “This experience has taught me a valuable lesson as to the context and the nuance of editorial liberties. I look forward to clarifying my position in the future towards a subject that it so vitally important and in which I wholeheartedly support.”

In an interview published earlier this week, Henry was questioned heavily about the #MeToo movement.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to not be around the kind of people who behave that way…To my memory there’s been no moments where I look back and think, ‘Ooh, OK, maybe someone shouldn’t have gone through that.’ I know there have been situations with people I’ve worked with being perhaps overfamiliar with some of the actresses. But, I’ve always walked up to them and said, ‘Hey, are you all right? That’s creepy’” he told GQ Australia.

The interviewer continued to ask him questions about the #MeToo movement, and Henry made some statements that have sparked some strong reactions.

“There’s a traditional approach to [flirting], which is nice. I think a woman should be wooed and chased, but maybe I’m old-fashioned for thinking that,” he added. “It’s very difficult to do that if there are certain rules in place. Because then it’s like: ‘Well, I don’t want to go up and talk to her, because I’m going to be called a rapist or something.’”

“So you’re like, ‘Forget it, I’m going to call an ex-girlfriend instead, and then just go back to a relationship, which never really worked.’ But it’s way safer than casting myself into the fires of hell, because I’m someone in the public eye, and if I go and flirt with someone, then who knows what’s going to happen? Now? Now you really can’t pursue someone further than, ‘No.’ It’s like, ‘OK, cool.’ But then there’s the, ‘Oh, why’d you give up?’ And it’s like, ‘Well, because I didn’t want to go to jail?’” Henry added.

One Twitter user, Helen Price, responded in a now viral tweet, “This is absurd. If Henry Cavill doesn’t want to be called a rapist then all he has to do is… not rape anyone. The mental gymnastics some men are doing to position themselves as “victims” of #MeToo is insane.”

Oh please. He can say all the chauvinistic things he wants, but we all know you’re gay!

GIVE ME A BREAK. You can’t say ANYTHING in this society nowadays without having your head bitten off.

  • mrs_right

He is really not off base with his concerns. My husband opened the door for a woman (his colleague and her friend), and the friend was vociferously offended. “I can do it myself!” Some women will see a rapist in every, “Hi, how are you?” So many men are finding themselves at a loss, and giving up hope of ever finding a mate.

  • Effy

BlindGossip has a few reports about him that are very unpleasant…

  • mrs_right

I saw those! Totally nasty if true! However, since they’re blind, anyone could say anything about anyone, and there’s no proof. That’s creepy, too.

  • Effy

I agree. There are SOME women (and men) who will take small gestures and turn it into something bigger. I get what he was trying to say (even though I think he isn’t as chivalrous as he pretends to be).

  • Effy

Agreed! Blind items are so hit and miss, but it is creepy/gross if it’s true.

What reports? Could you enlighten me lol

  • quartzoup

He is off base. He is creating scenarios in his head. because he does not know how to adjust to these new (long overdue) rules. He is a grown man, I promise you, he can adjust. Stop treating men like children, it helps no one.

How about we stop treating all men like we’re monsters chasing you in the dark woods. I can totally get what Henry is talking about.

More hysteria, more bombastic language, more fantasy scenarios. No one thinks ALL men are monsters lmfao.

You just don’t get it, do you? Nicole Eggert did the same thing to Scott Baio and he had to present evidence to prove that she was lying. Come out of your fantasy island before you accuse anyone of making a fantasy scenario.

He’s worried flirting may end up in jail. I mean come on! I agree….I don’t think he’s as much of a gentleman as he says he is.

  • AZGirl

Herpes…. doesn’t tell the woman until after. IF true… despicable.

  • Lexi

I’ve read several about him over the last few years. The general consensus is he treats
women like objects who should be thankful he is allowing them in his
presence. Blind sites as you say are iffy. CDaN is one where most of it is made up so it’s best to take everything with a pinch of salt. Blind Gossip on the other hand usually ends up being true 90% of the time and quite often they post evidence to back up their stories.

  • Lolo23

Wtf, no one deserves that 😷

  • Michael Lambretti

He’s allowed to have an opinion.

  • Michael J. Acuna

Actually no, men aren’t allowed to have an opinion about this….since we are all just tools for the oppressive patriarchy…

  • mrs_right

Wow, that is sad. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, although what’s most funny is that this is all moot: I am happily married, and I will never meet him anyway! And if I did ever meet, him… I am happily married! :D

  • suzybel

Ya but, Helen Price, even if he doesn’t rape someone, chances of him being accused, found guilty without proof and losing his job are pretty good. I don’t think he said anything that others aren’t thinking.

Why do you randomly pick and choose celebs to illustrate your points? You know I can do the same right? But it doesn’t move the convo anywhere . Please stop with the hysteria.

  • quartzoup

Lmao! You just started being cautious? Woman have been cautious for MILLENNIA.

  • http://www.yahoo.com Brandon Brown

Why do you continue to ignore the plight that these men are going through? If you’re a woman, then you’re the only one whose causing the hysteria here which just proves my and Henry’s point.
