Malibu Wine Safaris Explains Why They Didn't Evacuate Animals After Being Called Out By Whitney Cummings

Malibu Wine Safaris has responded after being called out by Whitney Cummings, who went to check on Stanley the Giraffe and the other animals amid the California wildfires.

Veterinarian Dr. Stephen Klause issued a statement on Facebook, writing, “Ranch personnel received minimal time notification (a little more than 2 hours) that the fire was likely to move over their area. This small window of time given to ranch personnel was due to the speed that the fire was moving because of the 50-70 mph Santa Ana winds. The ranch staff immediately instituted the planned fire protocol that was in place for just such an occurrence.”

“All of the exotic and domestic animals plus boarding horses were let out into the wide open central area that is contained with many fenced off pastures. This wide open area has no trees or brush, but consists of short grass, dirt, and a lake area. This barren enclosure has little to no ‘fuel’ to power a fire or facilitate the spread of one,” he continued. “There are over one hundred exotic and domestic animals in addition to dozens of boarding horses on Saddlerock Ranch. As a veterinarian with 33 years of experience, the fire protocol of moving the animals into the central area was the most prudent and realistic plan to get the animals to safety.”

The veterinarian continued, “Exotic animals cannot simply be haltered and moved onto a trailer and off of the property. The majority of them require anesthesia and major lifting capability to move them onto a trailer. It would take weeks to move a collection of that size and animal type, which in itself, would be an extreme risk to some of the animals. The staff did an amazing job in a very short period of time to accomplish this feat.”

Two animals were injured, and he also explained what happened to them.

Ms Cummings needs to mind her own GD business and let these professionals care for the animals. They made sure all the animals were fine. What the hell oes she know about exotic animals? Everyone has someone to say about everything.

Vet is being disingenuous. Fire started Thursday. Everyone by that evening was making plans to evacuate. An animal reserve with that many animals should have been instigating their plan. That’s right: 2 hours isn’t enough but anyone but an idiot would know that they couldn’t wait around like a normal homeowner for an evacuation alert. These guys just didn’t want to pay the costs. The LA zoo had plans and actions for the fire near Griffith Park. Here the vet says: “It would take weeks to move a collection of that size and animal type.” The vet is pretty much saying they are all goners no matter what because no emergency plan of evacuation is built around the idea of getting weeks.

There needs to be some sort of plan in place in such an area. There isn’t always adequate time but just in case procedures are never a bad thing.
