Penn Badgley Opens Up About His Experience Fighting For Vilma Carrillo's Freedom

Penn Badgley is opening up about his experience fighting for immigrant mom Vilma Carrillo‘s reunion with her daughter.

The 32-year-old actor teamed up with the Tahirih Justice Center to assist in their mission to find justice for Vilma, who escaped prolonged domestic violence in Guatemala and was hoping to find asylum in the US.

When she arrived at the border, Vilma was separated from her her 12-year-old daughter, Yeisvi, who ended up in foster care in Arizona.

After many legal hang-ups and miscommunications, Yeisvi was ordered to be deported while her daughter remained in the US.

But thanks to lawyers at Tahirih Justice Center and the support of thousands, her case was appealed and she was released and reunited with Yeisvi on January 11th.

“When I heard the news, my heart burst with happiness for her, but then I quickly remembered the countless others still incarcerated in the system she had been freed from. There are many others who continue to be separated from their children or are trying to come to our country for safety,” Penn wrote.

He added, “This policy and others, like a border wall, do not send a message of welcome, but rather a message of prioritizing hate and fear of relinquishing majority white privilege over equality for all people.”
