Whoopi Goldberg Opens Up About Sex Symbol Status as a Young Actress

Whoopi Goldberg keeps it fierce in her new shoot for Garage Magazine‘s Issue 16.

For the feature, novelist Ottessa Moshfegh – one of the 63-year-old The View host’s biggest fans – visited Whoopi in December of last year at her home in New Jersey.

Here’s what Whoopi had to share with the mag:

On moving from New York City’s SoHo, Manhattan, to her current residence: “I’d go out to do my shopping in SoHo, and just run back home. I’m anti-social, but I don’t want to be an asshole, so I talk to people when they come up to me. I like it out here, though.”

On her personal style: “You know, I love high heels, but I always wore them with socks. And fashion is finally catching up to me. When you go to the shows, now you see girls on the runway wearing socks with heels.”

On whether she had to dodge the pressures of being a sex symbol during her work as a young film actress: “Thank you, I did [have a hot bod]. I know.” About her 1987 hit Fatal Beauty, she said, “Nobody who worked on that movie saw me as sexy. They didn’t even think of me as a woman. Because I’m black.”

I can honestly say I never saw Goldberg as a sex symbol or even sexy. Who created this myth?

  • krtmom

They didn’t think of you as a woman because your black??? Maybe it’s because you’re fugly and don’t look like a woman!!!

  • krtmom

    Uh, she did…

Race-baiting bullshit. I grew up in the 80′s and I vividly recall those early Whoopi days. TRUST ME, people didn’t view her “not as a woman” because she’s Black. They viewed her not as a woman because she looked and acted like a MAN — deliberately — and still does. And that’s okay — but own it.

She created it. Just like she created the myth that she wasn’t treated like a woman “because I’m Black”. Believe me, she wasn’t treated like a woman because she deliberately looked and acted like a man. Not because she’s Black.

Whoopi, women have been wearing socks with high heels long before you did. It originated in Paris, France in the ’80s. Sorry you are not unique.
