Prosecutor on Jussie Smollett's Case Still Thinks He's Guilty

All charges against Jussie Smollett have been dropped and his criminal record is now cleared, but that doesn’t mean the prosecutor thinks he’s innocent.

The 36-year-old actor was previously indicted on 16 felony charges of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police of the hate crime he reported.

Chicago police and Mayor Rahm Emanuel have both criticized the decision to drop the charges. The reasoning for dropping the charge was that Jussie would likely only receive community service time as a punishment, and he has already completed community service time.

In an interview with CBS Chicago, First Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Joseph Magats says, “I do not believe he is innocent.” He added that he does believe Jussie is guilty.

The reason to drop the case is “based on all the facts and circumstances” and “based on his lack of criminal background.”
