City of Chicago Demands Jussie Smollett Repay $130k of Investigation Costs for False Police Report

The City of Chicago has sent a letter to Jussie Smollett demanding that he repay the city for the $130,106 “expended on overtime hours in the investigation” of the alleged attack on him back in January.

The 36-year-old Empire actor alleged that he was attacked by two men outside of his apartment building, but then it was discovered that he allegedly plotted the attack himself. Jussie was arrested on charges for filing a false police report.

“Ultimately, the Chicago police investigation revealed that you knowingly filed a false police report and had in fact orchestrated your own attack,” the letter from the city stated.

The charges against Jussie were dropped this week as prosecutors believed he would only receive community service time as a punishment and he has already completed enough community service.

“In an attempt to resolve this matter without further legal action, the City requires immediate payment of the $130,106.15 expended on overtime hours in the investigation of this matter,” the city wrote in a letter to him. “If the amount is not timely paid, the Department of Law may prosecute you for making a false statement to the City under section 1-21-010 of the Municipal Code of Chicago or pursue any other legal remedy available at law.”

Jussie‘s team responded to the letter in a statement to the Chicago Tribune, saying, “It is the mayor and the police chief who owe Jussie — owe him an apology — for dragging an innocent man’s character through the mud. Jussie has paid enough.”
