Jussie Smollett Responds to City of Chicago's Request to Be Paid Back for Assault Investigation

Jussie Smollett is not planning to pay back the city of Chicago for the investigation into his alleged assault, according to his legal team.

After the city demanded the 36-year-old Empire actor reimburse them for the $130,000 spent investigating his alleged attack, his lawyer Marc Geragos issued a response in a letter to the department of law on Thursday (April 4).

Mr. Smollett will not be intimidated into paying the demanded sum. Mr. Smollett vehemently denies making any false statements,” he wrote according to People.

He also said that if the city takes civil action against Jussie, he would also demand sworn depositions from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson.

“In light of their vested interest in the matter, we are confident that Mayor Emanuel and Superintendent Johnson will not object to providing their testimony under oath,” he wrote.

In the original letter from the city to Jussie, the city demanded to be repaid for the alleged story “in which you falsely claimed that two men attacked you while yelling racial and homophobic slurs.”

“Over two dozen detective and police officers participated in the investigation, ultimately spending weeks investigating your false claims, including a substantial number of overtime hours. Ultimately, the Chicago police investigation revealed that you knowingly filed a false report and had in fact orchestrated your own attack,” the letter reads.
