Amal Clooney Challenges UN Security Council to 'Stand on The Right Side of History'
Amal Clooney keeps it chic and sophisticated in an all white ensemble as she steps out for a meeting with her mother on Wednesday afternoon (April 24) in New York City.
The day before, the 41-year-old renowned lawyer spoke before the United Nations Security Council about tackling sexual violence in war.
Member nations of the Security Council are considering a resolution concerning sexual violence in conflict, which would classify rape as a weapon of war. The United States has threatened a veto on the measure due to language on reproductive and sexual health, on grounds that such language could imply support for abortion.
Amal was speaking on behalf of Yazidi women and girls who have suffered at the hands of Isis men – including Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad, who was seated next to her.
“Your Nuremberg moment, your chance to stand on the right side of history,” Amal declared (via ABC). “Although this draft resolution is a welcome step forward, especially insofar as it strengthens the sanctions regime for those who commit sexual violence, we must go further because if this august body cannot prevent sexual violence in war, then it must at least punish it.”
