Lizzo Opens Up About the Intention Behind Her Music: 'These Songs Are For My Big Black Girls'

Lizzo is on the cover of Essence‘s latest digital cover, out now.

Here’s what the 31-year-old “Juice” singer had to say…

On her body image: “I love creating shapes with my body, and I love normalizing the dimples in my butt or the lumps in my thighs or my back fat or my stretch marks. I love normalizing my Black-ass elbows. I think it’s beautiful.”

On fashion: “I never really cared about designers and fashion brands until recently, because they never cared about me… It’s not about fashion or being famous. It’s about being better and making sure that this world can hear us and respect us…”

On self-love through music: “These songs are for my big Black girls. Everyone can enjoy them, but I want to help us. This music is medicine and I’m trying to get it to my sisters. It’s so exciting to me to finally be at a level where I have exposure to my Black sisters, my big sisters, my Black trans sisters. It’s not about being poppin’. It’s not about being famous or fashion. It’s about being better and making sure that this world can hear us and respect us.”

She just makes me happy every-time I see her, even just in photos. Really great energy

  • KS_in_TP

Is she going to normalize high blood pressure, diabetes, liver and cardiac disease, stressed tendons and joints, and all the other illnesses and stresses that stem from lifelong obesity when middle age hits?

  • Wendy

I like her message. She’s allowed to feel like she is beautiful in her own skin. If anyone has a problem with that, you need to look into yourself. Quit acting like you care about her health. Care about your own health. Make sure you don’t get fat if you hate it so much. Ya’ll just want to hate her and that’s the easiest way. (looking at you KS)

I love my lumps and bumps and photoshopped thighs.

  • KS_in_TP

You sound like a big ol’ hurt baby. Girl, get emotional all you want. Obesity is a serious problem and it’s not “just” the obese person who bears the brunt of the problems they’ll face in the future. The entire healthcare system has to pick up the slack.

yeah, her and Chrissy Humpty Dumpty Metz.

that cover is grotesque. this celebration of morbid obesity is sick.
