Pernell Whitaker Dead - Boxing Legend Killed at Age 55

Boxing legend Pernell Whitaker was tragically killed on Sunday (July 14) after being hit by a car in Virginia. He was only 55 years old.

Police responded to a call in the evening at Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road in the Virginia Beach area. TMZ is reporting that the man has been identified as Pernell.

Throughout his career – which spanned from 1984 to 2001 – Pernell Whitaker won world titles in four different weight classes: lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight.

He had a 40-4-1 record including 17 knockouts in the ring. He also won the gold medal at the Olympics in 1984.

He’s considered one of the greatest of all time at the sport, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006.
