Awkwafina's 'The Farewell' Broke a 2019 Box Office Record

Awkwafina is all smiles while leaving the Ed Sullivan Theatre following an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday (July 16) in New York City.

The 30-year-old actress’ new movie The Farewell is currently playing in limited release and the film broke a box office record this weekend.

The Farewell achieved the biggest per-screen average of any movie so far in 2019!

The movie was shown on four theaters in the U.S. and earned $351,330 over the weekend, which averages out to $87,833 per theater. It’s important to note that one of the theaters shut down on Saturday night because of the New York City blackout, so there was even a potential for more money earned.

The previous record holder for the year was Avengers: Endgame, which posted a $76,601 per theater average back in April.

The Farewell is also one of the best reviewed movies of the year. It has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes!
