FaceApp Responds to Security Concerns Over Viral App

Just as it seems that everyone has used FaceApp, the viral app that can show you what you will look like in your old age. Many celebrities like Mindy Kaling and Busy Phillips (pictured here) have joined in on the viral craze.

However, today, security concerns came to light after the fine print on the app was revealed to say, “You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sublicensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you.”

The app’s founder Yaroslav Goncharov is now try to quell concerns saying that the company does not “sell or share any user data with any third parties.”

“We might store an uploaded photo in the cloud. The main reason for that is performance and traffic: we want to make sure that the user doesn’t upload the photo repeatedly for every edit operation,” he told People. “Most images are deleted from our servers within 48 hours from the upload date.”

Others were concerned that the app could access any of your photos on your phone.

“FaceApp performs most of the photo processing in the cloud. We only upload a photo selected by a user for editing,” he said, adding that they cannot access any other photos in the phone. “We never transfer any other images from the phone to the cloud.”

Users can also request the app wipe their information. While the company’s core team is located in Russia, the servers are located in the U.S. and Australia.
