'Storm Area 51' Event Organizer Says It Was 'Kind of a Joke'

Matty Roberts, the man who started the “Storm Area 51″ event on Facebook, says that he launched the page as a joke.

So, what is Area 51? It’s the name of the classified United States Air Force facility that has been described as an open training range. There are conspiracy theories that the government uses this area to store UFOs and aliens.

On the official event page, Roberts wrote: “We will all meet up at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and coordinate our entry. If we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens.”

1.7 million people have RSVPed to say they will attend the event on September 20 and another 1.2 million say they are interested in attending.

“I posted it on like June 27th and it was kind of a joke,” Roberts said in an interview with Nevada’s KLAS-TV. “And then it waited for like three days and like 40 people, and then it just completely took off, out of nowhere. It’s pretty wild.”

Roberts is now worried about the FBI knocking on his door.
