Diane Guerrero Speaks Out About How 'Doom Patrol' Addresses Mental Health

Diane Guerrero sparkles on the cover of Mood Magazine‘s Summer 2019 issue!

Here’s what the 33-year-old Doom Patrol actress had to share with the mag:

On how Doom Patrol is different from other superheroes: “We touch upon something that makes it a little more real. … It’s more of the superheroes feeling like they’re facing this feeling of something that we as humans are dealing with, which is our mental health. They’re not afraid to dive into the issue of the human psyche and how that works. The show does a really [good] job of humanizing them. That’s something really powerful and something we are dealing with as a society – how to deal with the conversation of mental health.”

On her Jane the Virgin character, Lina, and the how the show recently addressed infertility: “I love talking about that! We don’t talk about it enough. I’m at an age where the question of fertility and the pressure is high – whether I’m going to have children, am I going to have a family, will I have to freeze my eggs, do I want to focus on my career right now? These are all things in my life right now that are very prevalent, that I ask myself and that my reproductive system is asking as well.”

“I was really happy to talk about it in this state, especially on a heavily Latinx show. I feel our community, especially in the past, we don’t get the kind of care, we don’t have those kinds of conversations. Whether it’s because of religion or economic status. These kinds of questions of fertility are left to people who can afford to question infertility. The people who have really great healthcare or thousands of dollars to go through fertility treatments. It was really nice to talk bout it in the platform because I think women need more information about this. We need to be discovering and talking about different options for us. In the comical way that Jane the Virgin is, like coming up to Jane and saying ‘I want your eggs,’ what do you do? It asks these questions of, can you let go, and it’s such an interesting thing to think about what you would do in that situation.”
