Taylor Swift Talks Politics, Abortion, & Donald Trump

Taylor Swift is sharing her thoughts on politics, including her stance on abortion and Donald Trump.

The 29-year-old “You Need To Calm Down” singer opened up in a new interview with The Guardian.

Taylor revealed that she started feeling torn about the United States’ values when “all the dirtiest tricks in the book were used and it worked,” and she described the environment in the country as “gaslighting the American public into being like, ‘If you hate the president, you hate America.’”

“We’re a democracy – at least, we’re supposed to be – where you’re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate,” she continued. “I really think that [Trump] thinks this is an autocracy.”

Taylor did not endorse a candidate in the 2016 presidential election, citing her mother’s cancer relapse and her very public feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian as reasons she avoided the public eye: “I was just trying to protect my mental health – not read the news very much, go cast my vote, tell people to vote. I just knew what I could handle and I knew what I couldn’t. I was literally about to break.”

Taylor said her negative public appearance at the time made her feel “just useless. And maybe even like a hindrance,” adding that she was “really remorseful for not saying anything” and that she would have endorsed Hillary Clinton for president.

“Obviously, I’m pro-choice. I just can’t believe this is happening,” Taylor shared, vowing to “do everything I can for 2020”.
