Daniel Johnston Dead - Lo-Fi Music Superstar Dies at 58

Daniel Johnston has sadly died.

The lo-fi and alternative musician passed away after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday night (September 10), The Austin Chronicle reported and confirmed by his former manager.

The Hi, How Are You musician’s career began in the early ’80s, and he slowly amassed a dedicated following with his sparse style of music despite never being largely commercially successful. However, his music was covered by many mainstream stars, including Beck, Death Cab for Cutie and Lana Del Rey.

He was also open about his struggle with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, which was explored in the 2005 documentary, The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

“He’s a genius. And more human beings have to know about his crazy good songs and talent. His spirit is golden,” Lana previously said of the late singer.

Our thoughts are with Daniel‘s loved ones at this difficult time.
