Blu-Ray and Digital HD Releases

The Lion King

The Lion King roars to Blu-Ray, 4K and digital HD today.

Directed by Iron Man‘s Jon Favreau, the “live-action” remake of the popular 1994 animated classic probably deviates the least from the original story-line.

Like the original story, the new film follows the life of a young lion who flees his kingdom after his father’s untimely death. While in exile, and with the help of two really good friend, he learns to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.

The film is loaded with a star-studded cast including, Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Earl Jones, and Beyonce! It’s hard to call the new film “live-action” considering most of the film are CGI special effects. Nevertheless, the cinematography and vibrant sets truly pop in this release.

The film is delivered in Disney’s 2160p/HDR which looks amazing in UHD. The Dolby Atmos soundtrack is great as well, rounding out the fun musical numbers and action.

Extras include a Sing-Along version, a three-part feature on the making of the film, a breakdown of key scenes and more.

While the film was received with mixed reviews, mostly because it never really differentiated itself from the original, the film looks great especially through the shot by shot remake of the introduction. It’s just enjoyable and satiates the curiosity of what it would truly look like if The Lion King was ‘real’. A solid pickup.
