What's the Twist in 'Last Christmas'? Spoilers for the Ending...

The new holiday romantic comedy Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, has been released in theaters and it’s time to talk about that big twist at the end of the film.

If you’ve been following the coverage of the movie throughout the past year, it’s probably no secret to you that there’s a twist and you might have already read theories about what was going to happen.

Emilia recently spoke out to say that she was upset how people were revealing spoilers before the movie was released. Now that fans have had a chance to see the movie, let’s discuss.

Last Christmas follows a woman named Kate (Clarke) who works at a year-round Christmas shop in London. We find out early on in the film that she had a heart transplant about one year earlier and ever since, she has not felt like herself. She makes a bundle of bad decisions in her life and has alienated most of her friends and family.

Enter Tom (Golding), who seems too good to be true when he shows up outside of the Christmas shop. He and Kate start going on dates and if you pay close attention, you’ll realize that no one else in the world ever actually sees him that way that Kate does.

Tom does not use a cell phone and Kate often goes days without seeing him. One day she shows up at his apartment while looking for him and finds a real estate agent inside waiting to show the place to a prospective buyer. She finds out that Tom previously owned the apartment, but that he died one year earlier after being struck and killed while riding his bicycle. We then find out that Kate was given Tom’s heart during her transplant. The entire time, Kate was seeing a ghost/spirit who wasn’t actually there.

In the end, Kate turns her life around and dedicates time to helping the homeless and repairing her relationships with friends and family.

The movie was inspired by the lyrics of George Michael‘s song “Last Christmas” and it literally follows the premise of the opening line, “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart.”
