Margot Robbie & the Cast of 'Birds of Prey' Open Up About Imposter Syndrome & PTSD

Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rosie Perez are on the digital cover of Glamour UK‘s January 2020 issue, out now.

Here’s what the Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars had to say…

Margot, on what she would tell her younger self on the set of Neighbours and her self doubt: “I would want to tell her, ‘you are actually good enough.’ The biggest thing for me was I had this imposter syndrome. I still get it sometimes and think everyone will realize, ‘how did you get here? You are not good enough for this? Who let you in?’ I don’t think there is one thing where I have said, ‘you have nailed it.’ I always think, ‘you did what you set out to do but you missed the mark here and next time you are going to do it different.’”

Rosie, on sharing her PTSD from childhood trauma, with Margot: “I remember sharing with Margo that I had PTSD and she goes, ‘oh darling.’ And I said, ‘no, it’s okay. I’m just saying if you see me in a mood, don’t take it personally. It’s just something I’m going through and I’ll push through. It’s not your responsibility.’ And she helped me but it’s not anyone else’s responsibility. It’s mine.”

Jurnee, on her connection to Black Canary in Birds of Prey and how the role came along at a turning point in her life: “I felt like I was in a place in my life where I was like, ‘what the f–k do I do and where do I go?’ just like Black Canary. I learned by playing her that I’m stronger than I actually think I am. I had my son [Hunter] and I still nursing him when I started training. It was wild. It was one big balancing act of trying to still be a mom, going home and putting him down to sleep, but my knees f–king killing me when I leaned over the crib. I learned that my body is a f–king machine.”

Mary, on divorce, starting over and becoming independent: “I got divorced a couple of years ago, which was a big scary, crazy thing for me because I had been with the same person since I was 18 years old and that was what I knew…that’s been a big thing for me as well because growing up I had a mom who was always there taking care of everything. So, getting to that point where I don’t have a crutch to rely on to take care of things for me has been really empowering and important for me to do.”
