12 Things We Learned About Taylor Swift in ‘Miss Americana’

  • 1. Taylor used to live her life by a self-imposed moral code. She said, “My entire moral code as a kid and now is a need to be thought of as good. It was all I wrote about, it was all I wanted, it was the complete and total belief system that I subscribed to as a kid.”
  • 2. When Reputation didn’t earn Grammy nominations for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, or Record of the Year, Taylor‘s immediate reaction was, “This is fine… I just need to make a better record. I’m making a better record.”
  • 3. Taylor had an idea that “ME!” would be the first single from Lover when she was in the studio writing it with Joel Little.
  • 4. Taylor thought that the audience at the MTV VMAs in 2009 was booing her after Kanye West crashed the stage, even though they were booing him. She said, “It was so echo-y in there, at the time I didn’t know they were booing him doing that. I thought they were booing me. For someone whose built their whole belief system on getting people to clap for you, the whole crowd booing is a pretty formative experience.”
  • 5. After winning Album of the Year for the second time at the Grammys, Taylor realized she was missing a special someone in her life. She said, “I remember thinking afterward, oh my god, that is all you wanted. That is all you wanted, that is all you focused on. You get to the top of the mountain top and you look around and you’re like, ‘oh god, what now?’ I didn’t have a partner that I climbed it with that I could high five. I didn’t have anyone to talk to that I could relate to. I had my mom. But I wondered, shouldn’t I have someone that I can call right now?”
  • 6. Taylor had never eaten a burrito until she was 26. Right before turning 29 she said, “I didn’t ever eat burritos until two years ago. I just never had tried one.”
  • 7. Taylor likes ice in her wine.
  • 8. There have been times when Taylor would stop eating after seeing a picture of herself where she thought she looked big. She said, “I’ve learned over the years, it’s not good for me to see pictures of myself every day because I have a tendency and it’s only happened a few times and I’m not anywhere proud of it, but I tend to get triggered by something, whether it’s a picture of me where I feel I looked like my tummy looks too big, or someone says I look pregnant or something and that will just trigger me to starve a little bit, just stop eating.”
  • 9. While writing Reputation, she said of her relationship with Joe Alwyn, “I had to deconstruct an entire belief system for my own personal sanity. I also was falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal balanced grounded life and we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private.”
  • 10. Taylor had thought up the whole concept for the “ME!” video before she even recorded the song with Brendon Urie. She pitched the video to him in the studio!
  • 11. In regards to staying silent on politics, Taylor said she “was so obsessed with not getting in trouble,” that she wouldn’t say anything that would land her in that territory. That obviously changed though!
  • 12. Taylor‘s dad was not supportive of her coming forward as anti-Trump as he was nervous about the backlash, but she decided it was time for her to talk publicly about politics. She voiced support for the democratic candidate in the Tennessee senator race as republican candidate Marsha Blackburn voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and was anti-LGBT. She said, “It’s really basic human rights, and it’s right and wrong at this point, and I can’t see another commercial and see her disguising these policies behind the words ‘Tennessee Christian values.’ Those aren’t Tennessee Christian values. I live in Tennessee. I’m a Christian. That’s not what we stand for.”
