Donald Trump Acquitted in Impeachment Trial

Donald Trump has been acquitted in his ongoing impeachment trial, thus bringing it to an end.

The Senate made the vote on Wednesday (February 5) regarding whether he violated the Constitution in his dealings with Ukraine.

The first article, for abuse of power, received 48 votes for guilty and 52 to acquit. All 47 Democrats and independents voted guilty, including Senator Mitt Romney. The remaining 52 Republicans voted not guilty.

A two-thirds majority (67 senators) is required for conviction. They voted 47-53 on the second article, for obstruction of Congress.

Trump was accused of abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate former vice President Joe Biden, and of obstructing Congress in an effort to cover it up.

Mitt Romney became the first senator in U.S. history to vote to convict a president of his own party.

“The President is guilty of an appalling abuse of the public trust. Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one’s oath of office that I can imagine,” he said.

“We should agree this is the kind of recklessness the Senate was created to stop,” countered Mitch McConnell, who said it was part of a broader Democratic attack on institutions, after they failed to win elections.

He’s now the third president to be impeached, and the third to be acquitted.
