Joaquin Phoenix Wins at Oscars 2020, Uses His Speech to Promote Social Justice & Honor Late Brother River
Joaquin Phoenix completed his feel sweep of the awards season with a win for Best Actor at the 2020 Academy Awards on Sunday (February 9) at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
The 45-year-old actor won the award for his work in the movie Joker and just like he did at all the other awards show, Joaquin used his speech to promote social justice.

At the BAFTAs, Joaquin talked about the lack of diversity in the nominees. At the SAG Awards, he paid tribute to Heath Ledger, who previously played the Joker. At the Critics’ Choice Awards, he talked about veganism and thanked the show for having a plant-based meal. At the Golden Globes, he encouraged Hollywood to make greener changes.
“When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric, he said ‘run to the rescue with love and peace will follow,’” Joaquin said to end his Oscars speech, paying tribute to his late brother River Phoenix.
