Sheinelle revealed that she has a lesion on one of her vocal cords, making it hard to talk and causing her voice to sound hoarse. Her doctors expect that she will miss out on work for about six weeks, and she won’t be able to talk or use her voice for two weeks after surgery.

“There’s a piece of me that feels like it’s a little bit of grace. Because it’s a gift to sit still and do some soul searching, do some reading, do some writing. Nobody ever tells you you have permission to sit still,” she said.

“I’m really trying to use this as a time to sit still and just take care of myself. We talk a lot about self-care, and this is self-care to the nth degree.”

The condition of vocal ford trauma (phonotrauma) is more likely in people with professions that require frequent voice usage, like singers, actors and broadcasters.

“When you talk, your vocal cords vibrate, and so because they’re removing it, I’m going to be on vocal rest. I can’t talk because they want those cords to heal without banging into each other,” she explained.

She was already working with a speech pathologist for years after the discovery of a polyp on one of her cords in 2016, which eventually went away. She’s attended one-hour speech therapy sessions twice a week for the past five months, where a therapist massages her throat and gives her exercises to reduce tension.

We are wishing all the best to Sheinelle Jones in her surgery and recovery.
