Tom Cruise Talks His Mission For 'Top Gun: Maverick' In New Interview

Tom Cruise is opening up about his upcoming film, Top Gun: Maverick, in a brand new interview with Empire magazine.

The 57-year-old actor, who returns as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the flick, revealed just how the movie came about.

“We just started talking,” Tom shared, “and I realized that there were things that we could accomplish cinematically. I started getting excited about this big challenge of, ‘How do we do it?’ So I said to Jerry [Bruckheimer, producer], ‘I’ll do it if…’ meaning, I’m not going to do the CGI stuff.”

Tom also made it clear to the studio before the movie started what he wanted to do with the movie, with Jerry adding that there was a clear difference from the original – and the stars went through flight training for it.

“What’s different about this movie is that [in Top Gun] we put the actors in the F-14s and we couldn’t use one frame of it, except some stuff on Tom, because they all threw up,” he shared. “It’s hysterical to see their eyes roll back in their heads. So everything was done on a gimbal. But in this movie, Tom wanted to make sure the actors could actually be in the F-18s.”

If you didn’t see, Tom actually paid for Glen Powell to get his actual pilot’s license after filming sparked his interest in aviation.
