YouTube Defaults To SD Format Worldwide To Help Internet Congestion

YouTube has defaulted back to SD formats across the world for the time being.

The company announced the change in the default format this week.

“Given the global nature of this crisis, we are expanding that change [to default to SD video] globally starting today,” parent company Google shared. “This update is slowly rolling out, and users can manually adjust the video quality.”

Because many are working from home, and streaming from home because of coronavirus concerns, YouTube is hoping to reduce the congestion on networks with the rise in bandwidth usage.

You can still watch in HD format, if that option is available on the video you’re viewing.

“We continue to work closely with governments and network operators around the globe to do our part to minimize stress on the system during this unprecedented situation,” Google added to Bloomberg.
