Gabrielle Union Loves Her 'Beautiful & Real' Blended Family

Gabrielle Union is speaking out about her modern family.

The 47-year-old L.A.’s Finest actress released a children’s book called Welcome to the Party, to celebrate her daughter Kaavia‘s birth via surrogate.

“I wanted to create a love letter to my daughter to let her know that even though her entry into our family was a bit non-traditional, we love her and wanted her. And she is celebrated,” Gabrielle told People.

“This is also my love letter to every non-traditional family, blended families, that no matter how you became a new family, it is beautiful and real.”

She also opened up about her 18-month-old, affectionately nicknamed “Shady Baby,” and how she’s behaving amid quarantine.

“It’s changed dramatically in quarantine; I think it just sped up her learning curve. She likes to do things on her own. She wants to be a part of the conversation. But she’s also very clear about her boundaries.”

“She’s very suspicious. And considering she only has a few words, she communicates perfectly,” she added with a laugh.

The family also includes Dwyane‘s 18-year-old son Zaire and 6-year-old son Xavier, as well as 12-year-old daughter Zaya, from previous relationships.

“I stay in the bathroom probably a little longer than necessary just to give myself a little more time to pull it together! Just to cry or mindlessly scroll social media, whatever that is. We all give each other those extra long times in the bathroom to do whatever it is you sort of need to do with the door closed and have your own space,” she said of her busy life at home.
