Charge to Be Elevated for Police Officer Who Murdered George Floyd, Three Other Officers to Be Charged

Derek Chauvin‘s charge is being upped.

The police officer who knelt on George Floyd‘s neck and killed him will face elevated charges by Attorney General Keith Ellison, the Star Tribune reported Wednesday (June 3) amid nationwide protests against systemic racism and police brutality.

“According to sources, former officer Derek Chauvin, recorded on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he begged for air on May 25, will now be charged with second-degree murder,” the outlet reports.

In addition, the three other officers at the scene — Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane — will “also be charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder, according to the sources, who spoke on conditions of anonymity.”

Derek Chauvin was originally arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. This story is still developing.
