'Spongebob' Movie Skipping Theaters Amid Coronavirus Pandemic, Moves to VOD

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run is now skipping its theatrical release and will debut on VOD in early 2021.

After debuting on VOD, the film will then exclusively premiering on CBS All Access in 2021, Variety reports.

The new animated film follows SpongeBob and Patrick embarking on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home after the beloved pet snail gets snail-napped. As they navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove there’s nothing stronger than the power of friendship.

The movie was originally supposed to premiere in theaters on May 22, but was pushed back due to the Coronavirus pandemic that has caused so many movies to change plans. The movie was then delayed until August 7, before being moved one final time to VOD.
