Naya Rivera's Body May Never Be Discovered, Police Say
The authorities are speaking out with more details on the search for Naya Rivera and there is a distressing update.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kevin Donoghue said during a press conference on Thursday (July 9) that Naya‘s body may never be recovered.
Investigators are currently working under the presumption that Naya drowned in Lake Piru after a swimming accident while she was boating with her son Josey.
“If the body is entangled in something underneath the water it may never come up,” Donoghue said. “We don’t know.”
Donoghue said that the search is “complicated” right now as the visibility of the lake “is not very good, it’s terrible.”
“There’s a lot of trees and plants and such that are under the water that can cause entanglement. Makes it unsafe for divers and a complicated search,” he added.
Donoghue told People that they are “confident” that Naya is in the water. Emergency responders have searched the “shoreline for any clues whatsoever, any personal items, any footprints, anything that would indicate that she made it out of the water and because of the absence of those clues, that is why the focus of the search right now is in the water… She could have suffered a medical episode. We just don’t know. We won’t know until we find her.”
Investigators are searching Naya‘s credit card statements to make sure there haven’t been charges after her disappearance.
“We want to bring closure for the family, so we really are putting our best effort forward,” the sergeant said.
