Get to Know 'The Chase' Singer Alextbh With These 10 Fun Facts! (Exclusive)

alextbh is one of the rising stars we’re so excited about at Just Jared - and we want to give our readers a chance to know him even better!

The Malaysian artist and producer just dropped his debut EP called The Chase on Friday (July 17), including his previously released singles “Moments” and “Between.” The EP’s title track is his latest single.

“I usually write songs that come from a place of hardship and pain. But for ‘The Chase,’ I felt empty. There was this void in me I was trying to understand after spending a good amount of time in casual relationships and finding myself shutting out guys who were well-intentioned though I couldn’t bring myself to explore something deeper with them,” he explains.

The Kuala Lumpur native is also openly queer within a conservative Malaysian society, where the government has condemned the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Those relationships, in their totality, were ‘the chase’ – it starts and ends there. The music video is meant to portray the moments after a casual hookup – melancholy scenes of the outside world juxtaposed with flashbacks of the experience veiled in feelings of disgust, like ‘why did I do that?’ A lot of queer people go through this persistent detachment in relationships. It could be the result of the lack of emotional affection we’ve received that leads to this mess. I don’t want to think about a 5-year relationship, but deep down that is probably what I want. And if I keep leaving this ugly trail, I don’t think that idea will ever be attainable. Only time will tell.”

  • 1. I’m generally agnostic and don’t really subscribe to any belief system, but I will always knock on wood if people say it.
  • 2. I binge watch TV shows every single time. I have no patience for shows that air once a week. I watched all 4 seasons of La Casa de Papel in four days.
  • 3. I’m a minimalist. I own 10 black T-shirts, two pairs of black shorts and 2 pairs of trousers. Yes, Marie Kondo was the reason I adopted this lifestyle (albeit to an extreme level) but I knew of her before her Netflix show! I like the freedom of not owning things. And when I do own a thing, it’s usually because I enjoy using it. I want my life stored in one sexy Rimowa luggage.
  • 4. I flew to China to see my first love. I was genuinely insane, like I used my scholarship money to fund my trip. And guess what, I found out that he had led me on and he was seeing someone else on the side! I was such a loser to see him still despite knowing what happened. The stupid things you do for love!
  • 5. I count numbers in Chinese. I grew up speaking Mandarin predominantly before switching to English when I was a teenager. It’s just way easier for some reason. If I count in other languages like Malay or English, I have to say them out loud for it to make sense. I don’t know why!

  • 6. I’m an electronic engineering graduate. When I was younger, I used to tear my mom’s computer down only to reassemble it back. I love electronics. But, I was losing interest in my last year in college because of music. I never really learned how to juggle between making music and uni. I had to suck in one of them!
  • 7. I don’t really know how to swim. Like, I can paddle and get from one end of the pool to the other but for some reason I just can’t seem to stay afloat or keep my head above water.
  • 8. I still own a 2012 MacBook (Yes, the one with the CD-drive). Like, I could upgrade any time tbh, but this laptop has been through so much with me that I couldn’t bear to part ways with it. “Stoop So Low,” “Still Mine,” even all the shitty songs I made when I was 17 are from this MacBook.
  • 9. I’m a huge fan of documentaries. My favourite would definitely be Icarus. Like, I’m all for exposing truths on a person or an institution. I had a phase where I was obsessed with WeWork’s downfall!
  • 10. I actually don’t really know how to play any instrument. But, I do know chords and progression. I’d come up with a progression and use an app to translate it to MIDI notes. I used to own a keyboard but I ended up preferring to produce with just my laptop instead!
