New Zealand Celebrates 100 Days Free of Coronavirus Spread

New Zealand is celebrating 100 days without coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the feat in a statement on Sunday (August 9) that the nation, which has a population of just under 5 million, has gone 100 days with no detected COVID-19 spread, via multiple outlets.

New Zealand had a total of 1,569 confirmed cases and 22 deaths thus far, via Johns Hopkins.

“Achieving 100 days without community transmission is a significant milestone, however, as we all know, we can’t afford to be complacent. We have seen overseas how quickly the virus can re-emerge and spread in places where it was previously under control, and we need to be prepared to quickly stamp out any future cases in New Zealand,” New Zealand’s director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield said.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has been praised for her leadership amid the pandemic by putting the country into one of the most restrictive lockdowns for four weeks and shutting down international travel in March, recently kicked off her re-election campaign.

At the same time, the United States just surpassed 5 million confirmed coronavirus cases, and over 162,000 deaths.
