Joey King Denies She Auditioned for Katara, Says She'd Never Play a Character of Color

Joey King is shutting down rumors that she has auditioned play the role of Katara in the upcoming Netflix live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

A tweet went viral claiming that the 21-year-old actress was spotted at the casting call for the upcoming series.

Joey responded and said, “I have 0 involvement in this project and didn’t know this project even existed until I logged onto twitter today and my timeline was floooded with these rumors. I do not believe a white woman should play a character of color. Not me or any white woman for that matter.”

The series is still in development at Netflix and creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko just announced that they are no longer involved in the project.

DiMartino said, “Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped… Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”

The role of Katara was played by Nicola Peltz in the 2010 live-action feature film adaptation of The Last Airbender.

Earlier this week, Joey explained why she deleted one of her recent viral tweets.
