Roman Polanski Loses Court Battle to Be Reinstated Into the Academy

Roman Polanski is not being reinstated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 87-year-old movie director, who was expelled from the Academy over charges of statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl, lost a court bid to be reinstated on Tuesday (August 25), the LA City News Service reported, via Reuters.

The Chinatown director had previously won an Oscar in 2003, and was expelled back in May of 2018 due to a criminal case dating back to 1977.

He argued in his case that he was denied due process by the Academy in response to being expelled due the sexual misconduct allegations.

However, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mary H. Strobel wrote in a ruling he was “given the opportunity to present any evidence he deemed relevant.”

“We are pleased the court confirmed that the Academy’s procedures regarding Mr. Polanski were fair and reasonable,” the Academy said in a statement.
