Belgium Gives Princess Title To Delphine Boel After Proof She Is Former King Albert II's Daughter

Delphine Boel is now Princess Delphine of Belgium.

The sculptor’s lawyer announced the official news this week, after a long court battle between Delphine and the Royal House about her legitimacy of being King Albert II‘s daughter from an extra martial affair.

Delphine was born in 1968 after an affair between her mother, Baroness Sybille de Selys Longchamps, and the former King. The affair occurred during a time when his marriage to Queen Paola was estranged.

She had been fighting to be formally recognized as his daughter for some time, and eventually won in court for him to take a DNA test to prove the parentage.

King Albert had been refusing to even take the test, before it was ruled by the Court of Cassation that no errors were made during the trial and that the King was still forced to take the DNA test.

There was a threat of a 5,000 euro a day ($5,857) penalty for refusing to take the DNA-test.

As of October 1, Delphine will be styled Her Royal Highness Princess Delphine and her with Delphine of Saxe-Coburg being her formal name.

Her children, Josephine and Oscar, will also receive the titles of Princess and Prince.

Delphine is the youngest of Albert‘s children, following current King Philippe, Princess Astrid and Prince Laurent.
